The electrician and his 'boys' light the scenes according to the plot at the LIGHT REHEARSAL. To set means to 'switch on' the stage at any time, whether at the performance or at rehearsal. The order 'Set your lights!' is given by the stage director a few minutes before the rise of the curtain on an act or scene, and all lights on the plot go on, except those that are brought on at a cue after the act has opened. Footlights, spot-, and floodlights, backing lights, 'strips', 'lenghts' are all pass soon as the OVERTURE commences.
