[...] in 1783, several scientists [...] experimented with "la lampe à double courant d'air", which Argand presented complete the following year. Technically, it was based on the use of a circular, thin wick provided with a canal in the middle for the supply of air, so that the air could pass through the flame, and a lamp chimney surrounding the flame and narrowing at the top which increased the acceleration of the air current. By menas of pinions. the wick could be raised or lowered making the flame larger or smaller. [...] A separate reservoir for the oil made the lamp a little bulky.
