[In a] effort to standardize color internationally, the Commission International d’Eclairage, or CIE, formed in 1931 and introduced their standardized color table. Their mission was to develop a precise color model for use in both scientific as well as artistic applications. […] The CIE is a technical, scientific, and cultural nonprofit organization. Membership is purely voluntary; however, the benefit of being a member is to have and create color models or systems that are not proprietary and can be used all over the world. In a sense, they could be considered the “United Nations” of light and color.
